Well-wishers have donated assorted items to newborn babies at Kasantha Community Hospital and Kaporo Rural Hospital in Traditional Authority Kilupula in Karonga District.

The group of officers from Malawi Revenue Authority and Kiwe Police Unit as well as health workers from Kaporo Rural Hospital donated salt, sugar and soap.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Inspector Peter Kasawala of Kiwe Police Unit said as stakeholders working around the two health facilities, they felt obliged to share gifts with newborn babies as part of Christmas and New Year celebrations.

He said: “As stakeholders, we decided to mobilise resources and cheer up patients in these two health facilities as part of corporate social responsibility to the community that we serve and also strengthen our working relationship.”

Kaporo Rural Hospital in-charge Mercy Wandawanda commended the group for the donation.

She asked other well-wishers to emulate the group’s gesture and donate drugs to the facility.

“The donation cannot go without mention due to economic hardships people are going through. However, as a health facility, we experience erratic supply of drugs; hence, appealing for help.”

One of the beneficiaries, Lucy Kuyokwa from Mwamkamba Village hailed the group for the gifts, saying it signified love.

“We did not expect to receive such gifts from the group. It is indeed true that most people are going through hard times and can hardly buy necessities for their new born babies,” she said.

Another beneficiary Hilda Mponela said she had no soap to wash her wrappers and the baby’s napkins.

“I thank the group for remembering people in hospitals. Such good gesture shows people that love exists. May God bless them,” she said
